Avidyne Introduces IFD540 Touch-Screen FMS/GPS/NAV/COM as Part of New Panel-Mounted Avionics Stack

New plug-and-play, panel-mounted FMS/GPS/NAV/COM provides touch-screen user interface and highly-capable FMS based on award-winning Release 9 system; Aircraft owners now have a truly differentiated choice for their next-generation avionics upgrade.

Oshkosh, WI – Monday, July 25, 2011 – Avidyne Corporation, a leading provider of integrated avionics and safety systems for general aviation aircraft, today introduced the IFD540 GPS/Navigation/Communication system with touch screen user interface, as part of their full-line, plug-and-play avionics stack. The IFD540 is a slide-in replacement for the popular GNS530 navigators, which can dramatically reduce the installation cost and downtime for many customers.

“Leveraging the technology of our award-winning FMS900w and Entegra Release 9 systems, Avidyne is offering aircraft owners a truly differentiated choice with our plug-and-play avionics solutions,” said Patrick Herguth, Avidyne’s Chief Operating Officer.  “The IFD540 provides a perfect balance of touch screen and dedicated-button user interface that is designed to make it much easier for pilots transitioning from previous-generation systems—it’s very capable and it’s really easy to use.”

“We saw how successful ‘plug-and-play’ avionics has been with our DFC90 autopilot, and we wanted to offer a similar customer experience with the rest of our panel-mounted avionics,” said Dan Schwinn, Avidyne’s President and CEO. “So designing the IFD540 as a plug-and-play replacement for existing 530-series boxes made a lot of sense and provides a huge cost and time savings for customers who want to upgrade.”

“With the IFD540, pilots now have a choice. The best choice is Avidyne,” Schwinn added.

About the IFD540

The IFD540 provides the same powerful navigation, communication, and multi-function display capability as found in our award-winning Entegra Release 9 systems in a touch screen, panel-mounted avionics form factor.

The IFD540 has a highly-capable, easy-to-use Flight Management System (FMS) that meets TSO-C146c for full SBAS/LPV approach guidance. It features easy-to-use flight planning with ‘one-touch’ victor airway and jet-route navigation, Avidyne’s exclusive GeoFill™ waypoint nomination, and FMS Vectors™ capability. FMS Vectors provides fully-coupled guidance through all phases of flight without all the manual autopilot interaction and suspending of flight plans typically associated with previous-generation systems.

Featuring a 10-watt, 8.33 kHz, two-channel VHF communication radio—with an option for 16 Watts—the IFD540 also includes a two-channel VHF NAV/VLOC with automatic frequency nomination and one-touch Frequency List tuning. Active and standby COM frequencies are automatically decoded and the names of the stations are displayed in plain English, for easy station recognition and as a handy reminder of the agency to which you will be transmitting when pressing the push-to-talk button.

The IFD540 supports Avidyne’s CMax™ Electronic Approach Charts & Airport Diagrams, and also includes Terrain Awareness and Alerting as standard, with an option for integrated Class-B TAWS functionality.

The plug-and-play IFD540 is a slide-in replacement for the popular GNS530 navigators, providing a larger screen area with 400% more pixels, and a much easier to use, button and touch-screen interface.  The IFD540 is designed to integrate with all the existing equipment which the 430/530 systems previously operated, including a long list of PFDs, EFIS, CDIs, HSIs, remote sensors, discrete, autopilots, MFDs, etc.  And because it’s the same physical size as the 530, it fits into the same tray, uses the same antennas, and can be installed with no wiring changes, it makes an incredibly easy and affordable retrofit for any general aviation aircraft.
