Avidyne to Decommission Orbcomm-Based Narrowcast Datalink Services Effective Dec 31, 2010
ORBCOMM transceiver-equipped EX500 and EX5000 owners being offered 50% discounts on alternate Avidyne datalink solutions.
Lincoln, MA – Friday, January 22, 2010 –
– In an eBulletin to all its customers, Avidyne announced today that they are no longer able to service the ORBCOMM® satellite communicators that are installed in many EX500 and EX5000 MFDs. Additionally, Avidyne has observed a steady decline in the reliability of the service over the ORBCOMM satellite network.
Therefore, Avidyne will be decommissioning their ORBCOMM-based datalink service at the end of this year. Effective December 31, 2010, customers will no longer be able to receive weather data, send text messages, or track their flights via the ORBCOMM Narrowcast system. Effective immediately, Avidyne will no longer be accepting annual service subscription renewals or new ORBCOMM Narrowcast customers.
Early versions of the EX500 and Entegra-equipped Piper PA-28/32/46s and Columbia 350/400s were sold with an integrated ORBCOMM transceiver. (None of the Entegra-equipped Cirrus aircraft ever utilized an ORBCOMM transceiver).
Avidyne is offering any EX500 and EX5000 customers who are still using the ORBCOMM-based datalink service a 50% discount* on an upgrade to an Avidyne MLB700 or MLX770, and we will issue a credit to customers for any unused ORBCOMM messages/data plans that go past Dec 31, 2010.
MLB700 – SIRIUS/XM® Broadcast weather receiver with SIRIUS/XM radio capability
