Broadcast Datalink Weather

Avidyne leads the industry in datalink-capable multifunction displays and the EX500 and EX5000 MFDs provide the most advanced, and easiest-to-use datalink systems you can get.

EX5000 MFD Map Page

The EX5000 Map page displays a complete and powerful weather awareness picture to the pilot including:

NEXRAD

Broadcast Datalink Weather

In the United States, there are approximately 150 ground based Doppler weather radars. NEXRAD (next generation radar) is the term applied to the mosaic created from integrating these individual Doppler pictures into a single nationwide color-coded weather picture. The NEXRAD mosaic is displayed on the EX5000 Map and offers pilots a powerful weather avoidance tool. The NEXRAD mosaic updates about every 6 minutes offering a close to real-time weather radar picture for any portion of the continental United States.

Advanced NEXRAD features that are available in Entegra Release 6 include Storm Track Vectors. Storm track vectors display a storm cell’s ground speed in knots and direction of travel on top of a NEXRAD generated storm cell. Within the storm track a Hail Warning will alert the pilot to a greater than 50% chance of hail when the Storm Track Vector changes from black to white.

Lightning

Broadcast Datalink Weather

Lightning data is overlayed on the EX5000 Map page. Aircraft owners have the unique cability to configure an aircraft with ground-based lightning detection, airborne lightning detection, or a combination of ground and airborne lightning detection.

Graphical METARs

Broadcast Datalink Weather

METAR is an Acronym for METeorological Aerodrome Report. It is the primary observation code used in the United States for reporting surface meteorological data. METAR reports include wind, visibility, runway visual range, present weather, sky condition, temperature, dew point, and altimeter setting. In the U.S., METAR reports are taken once an hour between 50 minutes past the hour and the top of the (next) hour. METARs are displayed as a “colored flag” on each reporting METAR station on the EX5000 MFD moving map.

AIRMETs and SIGMETs

AIRMET and SIGMET boundaries are also displayed graphically on the map page. It was not uncommon for a pilot to fly into a active AIRMET or SIGMET simply because the boundaries where difficult to define, but with the EX5000 pilots can quickly and easily recognize the boundary lines for each active AIRMET or SIGMENT and avoid potentially dangerous areas of weather.

TFRs

All Special-Use and Class Airspace boundaries are clearly depicted on the map, along with available Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs). The EX5000’s high-resolution display allows you to easily see and remain clear of restricted airspaces.

Putting it all together

Broadcast Datalink Weather

When receiving broadcast datalink weather, the EX5000 MFD Map page with integrated onboard lightning detection and integrated onboard color weather radar capability offers pilots a level of weather and airspace situational awareness that has never before been available in general aviation aircraft.

Trip and Nearest Pages

The EX5000 MFD Map page is not the only page that offers critically important weather data. The EX5000 Trip and page provides additional weather information about your route of flight, nearest airports to your present position and destination airport as well as potential alternates.

Textual METARs, TAFs, Winds aloft and freezing level data are all reported for waypoints and airports along your route of flight. This information can be critical when determining a safe alternate airport in the event of inclement weather or an emergency situation.

The EX5000 MFD provides plain text translation of each METAR, which contains a mini-weather report for that reporting point. It decodes and displays ceiling, visibility, wind speed/direction, temperature/dew point, barometric setting.
